Lisbon, September 2024

The workshop “Systems and contexts of the children in (potential) conflict with the law” organised in Lisbon, alongside our WG meetings, covered diverse topics in youth justice and communication. Anette Stoorgaard (University of Aarhus) discussed the shift in Scandinavian youth justice from support to punitive measures. David Borland and Emma Clements (Royal Borough of Greenwich, UK) explored communication needs in Greenwich’s Youth Justice Services. Elaine Williams (University of Greenwich) highlighted therapeutic engagement for marginalized groups. Raquel Jiménez Martos (Diagrama, Spain) emphasized the right to information in juvenile justice, while Miet Vanderhallen (University of Antwerp) addressed communication gaps in police interviews with child suspects. João Costa (a linguist, former Minister of Education in Portugal and now leading the OECD Education Policy Committee) discussed inclusive education, and Jan de Jong (University of Bergen) examined language impairments in multilingual youth within the justice system.
